Rob is a man of Kent and now a happy exile in the west country. Cranbrook School provided him with a happy education, 3 A levels (not to be sniffed at) and a wealth of opportunities such as county rugby honours and what turned out to be a not so flourishing acting career!

He spent a gap year in the British Army in the Royal Engineers in 1994/5, ranked 2nd Lieutenant, before going to University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne Medical School. Rugby, beer and a little study thrown in for good measure in 5 happy years, alreet!

During his career as a Doctor he’s had the privilege to help people in a number of specialties and joined general practice in 2008. As a GP, not only can he provide a personalised service for his patients, but he can also carry on in his pursuit of some crazy adventures, none more so than the Atlantic Row and the Everest climb.

He’s summited Everest 5 times (in the process equalling a record in 2007 of 2 summits in one season, never previously achieved by a western climber), Cho Oyu (6th highest mountain in the world) 2 times and Denali (highest peak in North America) 2 times, amongst many, many others. His time in the mountains has lead him in to scientific research looking at the genetic basis for acclimatisation and additionally, he helped film and co-present for BBC 1, the documentary series “Everest ER”.

In Spring 2008, he worked as the official cameraman and personal physician to Sir Ranulph Fiennes on his attempt to summit Everest in order to raise money for Marie-Curie Cancer Care. He made it his 5th summit on 24th May and was part of the effort which raised £2.5 million for the charity. A strong and lifelong bond was forged between himself and the amazing team of nurses and fund-raisers at Marie-Curie Cancer Care.

After approximately 2 months at sea on the Atlantic with Stu, he’ll compete in the Marathon des Sables, March 2010 (7 marathons in 6 days in the Saharan dessert) and finally, Everest for a 6th time (hopefully) May 2010. All these events will be aimed at trying to raise loads of money for Marie-Curie Cancer Care.

Stuart was born 22nd January 1976 in the former mining village of Dinnington, South Yorkshire. Whilst attending the local Comprehensive school he developed a passion for all things sports and science related. This took him on to study Medicine at Dundee University, from where he graduated in 1999. During this time he represented Dundee University Rugby team and their drinking team (at one of which he excelled!).

He relocated to the South West of England in 2001 to undertake surgical training, gaining Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2005. He went on to work as a senior doctor in A&E medicine and Radiology. During this time he developed an ongoing interest in Expedition Medicine and started working for 'The Ultimate Travel Company' as an Expedition Doctor, having the privilege of taking groups up Mt Kilimanjaro (5892m) in Tanzania, Mt Toubkal (4167m) in Morocco and cycling along Lake Malawi.

Living in the South West brought many opportunities; enabling the development of a passion for water-based sports, now a keen surfer, windsurfer, wakeboarder and PADI advanced diver. A true jack of all trades, master of none!

In 2007 he left hospital medicine and moved to North Devon to take up General Practice and enable the continuation of an adventurous lifestyle. This is when fate brought him together with Rob and the dream of ocean2summit was conceived! This will require a different level of fitness altogether and a long range training plan. This has included: the Dublin Marathon and a couple of 10 mile multi-terrain races; "The Grizzly" - a 20 mile coastal trail run; The Exmoor Coastal Marathon; Trekking to Everest base camp and climbing Island Peak (6100m); The Exmoor Beast (a 100km bike ride) and a couple of Triathlons thrown in for good measure!
