Stuart was born 22nd January 1976 in the former mining village of Dinnington, South Yorkshire. Whilst attending the local Comprehensive school he developed a passion for all things sports and science related. This took him on to study Medicine at Dundee University, from where he graduated in 1999. During this time he represented Dundee University Rugby team and their drinking team (at one of which he excelled!).
He relocated to the South West of England in 2001 to undertake surgical training, gaining Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2005. He went on to work as a senior doctor in A&E medicine and Radiology. During this time he developed an ongoing interest in Expedition Medicine and started working for 'The Ultimate Travel Company' as an Expedition Doctor, having the privilege of taking groups up Mt Kilimanjaro (5892m) in Tanzania, Mt Toubkal (4167m) in Morocco and cycling along Lake Malawi.
Living in the South West brought many opportunities; enabling the development of a passion for water-based sports, now a keen surfer, windsurfer, wakeboarder and PADI advanced diver. A true jack of all trades, master of none!
In 2007 he left hospital medicine and moved to North Devon to take up General Practice and enable the continuation of an adventurous lifestyle. This is when fate brought him together with Rob and the dream of ocean2summit was conceived! This will require a different level of fitness altogether and a long range training plan. This has included: the Dublin Marathon and a couple of 10 mile multi-terrain races; "The Grizzly" - a 20 mile coastal trail run; The Exmoor Coastal Marathon; Trekking to Everest base camp and climbing Island Peak (6100m); The Exmoor Beast (a 100km bike ride) and a couple of Triathlons thrown in for good measure!
